Freshly roasted coffee beans are porous and will absorb traits such as moisture and smells from their environment, which will negatively impact the quality of your coffee.

By storing your coffee beans correctly, you will maximise the longevity of their freshness and flavour.

The basic principles of effective coffee storage are really quite simple:

  • Keep well away from moisture
  • Maintain a consistent ambient temperature
  • Limit exposure to light
  • Decrease air movement

How to store your coffee

Fresh coffee is best stored in an opaque airtight container and kept in a cupboard well away from any external walls or heat sources such as an oven, boiler or radiator.

You can also keep coffee in its original foil-lined packaging by rolling the top of the bag down as far as possible and sealing it tightly shut with a peg, a clip or something similar.

The aim here is to keep as much air out of the bag as possible and, as always, keep the coffee away from direct sunlight.

If you have a bean-to-cup coffee machine, beware of overfilling the hopper. We recommend that you add beans as and when they’re needed instead of in bulk, as this will ensure that the coffee’s taste and aroma remains intact right up to the point of consumption.

Should you freeze coffee beans?

The general rule of thumb here is no. However, if you have purchased a large bag of beans and will be unable to use them all within a reasonable amount of time, then exceptions can be made.

If you do need to freeze some coffee beans you must only do so once and should follow these steps:

  1. Separate the beans into daily portions ~ This will allow you to only take out the amount you require. The freezing and thawing process will see the beans lose some of their unique characteristics, so it’s vital to only subject them to this procedure no more than once.
  2. Double (or triple) bag the beans ~ Freezers are ripe with moisture so doing this will help to protect your coffee from becoming damaged.

Last but not least…never store your coffee in the fridge!
